German e-bike exports up 56% year-on-year in the first quarter

According to the ZIV (Association of the Bicycle Industry), German bicycle exports are starting to rise. 260,000 bicycles were exported in the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 14% compared to the first quarter of 2022. Exports of e-bikes grew even more, to 190,000 units, a 56% increase from the first quarter of 2022. In total, German customers abroad have risen by 28 percent compared with last year, ZIV said, with the majority of bicycle and e-bike production exported to EU countries.

Imports also increased, with 680,000 bicycles and 350,000 electric bicycles imported in the first quarter. Compared with the same period last year, they increased by 2.3% and 12.7%, respectively.

Changes in production and sales

The production of electric bicycles in Germany is similar to last year, with 1.05 million units produced in the first five months of this year, which is about 5% higher than in 2022. The output of mechanical bicycles is significantly lower, only 450,000 units, which is about 10% lower than last year. This also shows that the market share of electric bicycles in Germany has increased significantly,

The sales of bicycles in Germany in the first half of the year have been significantly affected by the economic environment and seasonality. In the first five months of 2023, the sales of electric bicycles will be 850,000, a decrease of about 12%, and the sales of mechanical bicycles will be 830,000, a decrease of about 20%. .

The low growth rate in the early period was predictable, ZIV CEO Burkhard Stork said: "Given the persistent inflation in Europe, declining buying desire and bad weather, we expect the market to remain depressed in the first few months of 2023", but This trend did not last forever. Since mid-May, sales began to pick up, and the rate of increase was still rapid until June.
