F3 bridge: The biggest cycling including road ebike investment in the history of Belgium

Recently opened section of F3 cycle highway costs a record €32.5 million, a price tag which highlights exactly why cycling and road ebike infrastructure needs to be considered from the beginning of all TEN-T projects.

The F3 cycle including road ebike highway connects Leuven with Brussels, following service roads built as a part of a railway upgrade in 2006. But as the cycle highway was not part of the original design, several retroactive investments have been necessary to fix missing links. The most difficult and expensive project was that needed to cross the ring-road of Brussels. This 2 km section of the F3 finally opened on 30 April 2022.

With a price tag of €32.5 million, it is the single most expensive cycling investment in the history of Belgium and is a typical example of how it is cheaper in the long run if cycling infrastructure is considered from the beginning of all TEN-T projects.
